The Champions of Courage Awards celebrate individuals and teams whose actions embody ethical leadership, courage, and innovation.
Welcome to the
Champions of Courage Awards

Part of the Ethics Forum International, the Champions of Courage Awards, founded by Wendy-Ann Smith, align with its broader commitment to ethical leadership, integrity in professional practice, and systemic impact.
The Champions of Courage Awards celebrate individuals and teams whose actions reflect ethical leadership, bold integrity, and a commitment to the greater good. Each story reveals how courage is lived—how values are embodied, voices are lifted, and change is sparked in real and human ways.
The Awards are proudly supported by the Coaching Ethics Forum and Ethical Edge Insights, shining a light on the moments that move us—and the people who lead them.
Why Courage Matters: The Theory Behind the Awards
In The Courage Quotient, Robert Biswas-Diener writes, “bravery is a vital part of living well” (p. XV), highlighting courage as an essential ingredient of a meaningful and engaged life. He defines courage as “the willingness to act toward a moral or worthwhile goal despite the presence of risk, uncertainty, and fear” (p. 10). This understanding emphasises that courage is not about fearlessness but about the resolve to move forward with purpose, even in challenging circumstances.
This resolve becomes especially impactful when directed toward moral and ethical action. Jonathan Haidt, in his article The Positive Emotion of Elevation (2000), explores how witnessing acts of moral beauty inspires individuals to moral excellence, bringing a profound sense of personal satisfaction and meaning—a “feel-good factor” that reinforces our humanity. Courage in this context uplifts and inspires, creating a ripple effect of positive change.
Todd Kashdan, in his book Curious? Discover the Missing Ingredient to a Fulfilling Life (2009), adds another dimension by linking courage with curiosity. He suggests that curiosity acts as a catalyst for courageous behaviour, enabling individuals to confront fear and uncertainty with openness and a desire to learn. In the context of moral and ethical action, this combination empowers individuals to explore new perspectives, challenge the status quo, and take principled stands.
Inspired by these insights, the Champions of Courage Awards were created to celebrate and honour acts of moral and ethical bravery. These awards highlight how courage strengthens the fabric of humanity, fostering a shared human endeavour for a life well lived. By recognising these stories, we are not only amplifying examples of courage but also curating humanity at its finest—elevating the practice of ethicality as a foundation for personal growth, professional leadership, and collective progress.
