Joel DiGirolamo was recognised as a Champion of Courage 2025 — Ethical Changemaker for his pivotal contributions to shaping the ethical future of the global coaching profession.

As Vice President of Research and Data Science at the International Coaching Federation (ICF), Joel has played a central role in advancing coaching as both a science and a profession. His work demonstrates the courage required to look beyond current practice and anticipate the structures, standards, and ethical frameworks that will guide coaching into the future.

Joel’s leadership has been particularly significant in two areas: strengthening coherence across the diverse disciplines of coaching and helping the profession prepare for the ethical implications of emerging technologies. Through his work with the ICF, he has helped synthesise the core excellences that underpin coaching across many domains — from executive and leadership coaching to health, agile, and performance coaching. This effort created a shared language for coaching excellence, supporting greater cohesion within a profession that has historically evolved through many independent specialisations.

At the same time, Joel recognised early that artificial intelligence would fundamentally reshape coaching practice. Long before AI became a widespread topic of discussion, he led the development of the world’s first comprehensive AI coaching standards, establishing ethical guardrails to help the profession navigate emerging technological realities.

This work required both foresight and courage: anticipating risks related to privacy, bias, misinformation, and the potential erosion of human connection in coaching relationships. Joel’s leadership helped ensure that innovation would not outpace ethics, embedding responsible thinking into the future of the profession.

Together, these contributions represent a powerful synthesis: a unified foundation for coaching practice alongside an ethical framework for navigating the technologies that will shape its future. Through this work, Joel DiGirolamo has not simply responded to change — he has helped shape it, guiding the profession toward a future grounded in integrity, responsibility, and ethical clarity.
